Our company needs a secure network for 300 or fewer users today

Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 supports up to 75 users or devices.
Microsoft Windows Essential Business Server 2008 supports up to 300 users or devices.
Our business is growing at a fast pace and our IT needs are expanding.
As your business needs change, these products provide a “technology building block” for additional servers and a seamless transition to the full line of Microsoft Server products, using Transition Packs. We recommend you decide based on your 1-yr and 2-yr growth plans, as well as on your current and future application and performance needs.
We are acquiring other companies and need to connect with their data and email immediately until we can incorporate everything into our server network.
The Windows Essential Server Solutions products are meant to be the primary network and email system and not a down-level branch office or subsidiary solution.

IT Budget and Resources
We are looking for a simple implementation.
Both Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Essential Business Server 2008 have wizards that guide the Administrator through the installation.
We want to get everything we need for the business in one integrated solution.
Both Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Essential Business Server 2008 provide an integrated package for your IT needs.
We have a limited budget and want to get everything our business needs for the lowest price.
Both Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Essential Business Server 2008 are more economical compared with purchasing all the included components on a standalone basis.
I want products which reduce the IT management complexity.
Windows Small Business Server 2008 offers real-time insight into the overall health and security of your IT environment. Color-coded icons provide an overall assessment of a particular security or health grouping.
Windows Essential Business Server includes Microsoft Systems Center Essentials 2007, a new management solution specially designed for midsized businesses. In addition to this, Windows Essential Business Server also offers several IT management capabilities that help administrators to proactively manage their IT environment with increased efficiency.
I want simplified licensing
Both these products provide a single license that covers all underlying technologies and the Client Access Licenses (CALs) required to connect to them. Managing licenses is easy based on detailed licensing reports, point-and-click assignments, and easy license installation wizards.
Application Support
We use applications that require a database
Supported but not with technology in the box. You must purchase a copy of SQL Server and another copy of Windows Server.
Premium Edition is a more affordable option, because includes a copy of SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server.

Reliability and Security
A failover solution is mission critical to my business in the event of server downtime.
These products do not offer failover solutions. Running these products in combination with Windows Server can provide partial fault tolerance for files and data that reside on the server(s) running Windows Server.
Windows Essential Business Server 2008 supports failover for domain controllers and DNS servers.
I want robust email security.
Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server, which is included in these products, helps protect your environment from email borne viruses, worms, and spam. Forefront Security for Exchange incorporates multiple industry-leading antivirus engines offering layered protection against the latest email based threats.
We need to manage our employees’ use of the internet.
No.
Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server provides internal monitoring and management of Internet access and is included in both editions.
Internet Presence
My business needs a website and I want to securely host it in-house.
Not recommended. SBS 2008 provides the capability to host websites in-house. Because it must be the domain controller, this results in a situation in which Internet traffic uses bandwidth that would normally provide services to internal users, potentially compromising performance. It also gives Web site visitors access to your domain controller which can be security risk.
Depends. Since Premium Edition includes an additional copy of Windows Server (and SQL Server), you could use this copy of Windows Server to host your website, without impacting the performance of your internal network.
It is not recommended using any of the three principal Windows Essential Business Servers for hosting an Internet site. However, Windows Essential Business Server can securely pass incoming traffic to a website hosted on a separate server

Remote Access and Mobility
Employees will connect using Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices.
Both these products integrate with Windows mobile-based devices (using Exchange Server 2007 which is included), so employees can access their email, contacts, calendar, and more from anywhere they have a data connection.
Users need access to their desktops from a remote location.
Remote Web Workplace, a feature unique to these products, enables users to connect to email, internal websites, files in the document folders on their desktops, business applications, and files on the company network using any computer connected to the Internet. All that is required is a username and password.
Employees should be able to connect to the network securely from outside the office.
Windows Small Business Server 2008 requires a separate network firewall product for Internet protection. Windows Small Business Server 2008 will support both traditional hardware firewalls and software firewalls such as Microsoft Internet Security Server (ISA) in this capacity (requires separate purchase). In addition, Windows Small Business Server 2008 will configure local firewalls on both the SBS server and clients to keep the internal network secure.
Both these editions include Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server, which offers tight security for remote connections.
